Quick little video on how to sketch cars in perspective – using ellipses.

Hopefully it will help some of you guys out with perspective sketching. Try it out!

Start big, get the proportions and volumes down, add a centerline and then you can start designing your car. Or product

I used to start with adding details to my sketches early, too early! The first thing we want to do is to give ourselves an understanding of the scale and proportions of what it is we are sketching. The easiest way to do this, at least in my opinion, is to start with ellipses. Now, our car or product is going to fit inside this ellipse. Once our ellipse is down on the paper, we want to start creating new ellipses, defining the different volumes of the object. For example, I might make one large ellipse for the main body of a car sketch, then add another, smaller ellipse that will become the greenhouse, or “coupe”.

I hope this made sense and help you on how to sketch cars in perspective! Basically, I like to keep things simple. Simplicity is beautiful :) Start simple, then add details.

What do you think of this way of sketching? Let me know in the comments below!
