Tap water may require suitable conditioning before it enters the aquarium, particularly where chlorine or chloramine is used within the public water supply. Replacement water should also be reasonably close to the aquarium temperature to avoid sudden changes.

Filter maintenance needs to be performed carefully. Biological media contains the bacteria responsible for processing waste, so routinely sterilising the entire filter can disrupt the aquarium's biological stability. Maintenance should follow the requirements of the filtration system while preserving its established biological function.

Algae is another normal part of aquarium keeping. A small amount does not necessarily indicate a problem, but excessive growth may suggest an imbalance involving lighting, nutrients, maintenance or stocking.

Regular observation of the fish can provide useful early warning signs. Changes in appetite, rapid breathing, unusual swimming behaviour or persistent hiding can indicate that something within the aquarium requires investigation.

Water conditions should usually be checked before assuming that unusual behaviour is caused by disease. Environmental problems can produce symptoms that resemble illness, and adding medication unnecessarily may complicate the situation.

New livestock can also introduce pathogens into an established aquarium. More experienced fishkeepers may use a separate quarantine aquarium so new arrivals can be observed before being introduced into the main display.

Equipment deserves routine attention as well. Filters can become restricted, heaters can malfunction and lighting systems can fail. Checking equipment regularly is considerably easier than dealing with the consequences of an unnoticed failure.

Good aquarium maintenance is therefore more about consistency than constant intervention. A mature aquarium contains an established biological community, and maintaining stable conditions is generally preferable to repeatedly making major changes.

Choosing an aquarium should ultimately begin with the animals and environment you want to create. Consider adult fish sizes, appropriate group numbers, filtration requirements and maintenance before concentrating on appearance or additional features.
